DUNE RATS RIP UP SA: South African Tour - May 2013

Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, the DUNE RATS combine the laid-back musical forces of BC and Danny to create something which sounds like it could have only been created on a perfect, sunny beach somewhere far away. After releasing their Social Atoms and Sexy Beach EPs, the DUNE RATS have completed successful tours with artists like The Hives, Best Coast and Bam Margera - and this May they will be touring SOUTH AFRICA for the first time!

DUNE RATS' debut EP ‘Sexy Beach’ received praise both nationally and internationally, capturing the minds and hearts of music bloggers around the world. This led to DUNE RATS' first national tour in February 2011, supporting party monsters DZ Deathrays, only months after forming. The release of their second EP ‘Social Atoms’ in September 2011 saw DUNE RATS' first taste of airplay, with single "Pogo"gaining high rotation on Australia's national radio-station Triple J.

Throughout 2012 the momentum has continued with constant touring. DUNE RATS' reputation for a raucous and energetic live show gained them a spot on the Big Day Out Festival and national tours with bands such as The Drums, Best Coast, The Vines, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graphitti, and Cults.

DUNE RATS new single "Fuck It" has followed up the boys' previous airplay success and was recently added to rotation on Triple J.

Be sure to catch DUNE RATS in South Africa This May!

STRAATLIGKINDERS release their music video for PETRUS with Sign Language by Vicki Fourie

This week saw the release of a new music video by STRAATLIGKINDERS for their song PETRUS - featuring former Miss Deaf South Africa and runner up Miss Deaf InternationalVICKI FOURIE, interpreting the song in sign language.

The video was shot at various locations across Cape Town by Werner Botha from Plastiek (also director of photography for the shoot) and directed by Bouwer Bosch. The video features Bouwer Bosch singing PETRUS, with Vicki Fourie next to him interpreting the song and lyrics in sign language, with their background constantly changing and taking the viewer on a journey across Cape Town.

“I came up with the concept for the video about a year ago and did some research about hearing impaired people in SA and came across Vicki Fourie. I read her story about her raising funds to get a cochlear operation so she can have 80% hearing and we wanted to try and help from our side with awareness around what she is doing with her life. We wanted to help tell her story.”

When Bouwer contacted Vicki, she was immediately eager about the idea for the video. The only problem was that she does not really speak sign language - she lipreads and speaks like a hearing person as means of communication. After listening to the powerful song, she knew that she had to be involved. She contacted the National Institute For The Deaf in Worcester, and asked them to help her learn the song in sign language. They were very keen and it was a great team effort, and it resulted in this beautifully interpreted song in sign language.

“I couldn’t believe that Bouwer actually had the guts to do something like this – something that’s so original, fresh and interesting. Something that’s never really been done before. More than 10% of South Africa’s population struggles with hearing loss, and it’s the reality that we have to face daily. The fact that Straatligkinders decided to this video in SL as well, makes it more welcoming for people with hearing loss to enjoy this video as well. This video will inspire the artists out there to start drawing in the deaf community.

I’ve already received some feedback from certain deaf people, and they are incredibly excited! They’ve never really seen anything like this happen before, especially not in the South African music industry. The fact that Straatligkinders – a band with such high influence and stature – acknowledges that there are deaf people out there that uses sign language as means of communication – even when singing – is amazing.”

International Electronic DJ Boys Noize To play at Vodacom IN THE CITY.

Following the exciting announcement that UK indie sensations, alt-J, will be performing at this year’s Vodacom In The City on 4 October, the word on Twitter, online radio and other social media  platforms  is: ‘will the next international act be a band or a DJ?’
In response, Vodacom In The City is proud to announce that award-winning DJ, Boys  Noize, has been added to the growing international line up at this year’s event.
Making music for over half his lifetime, Alex Ridha, well-known to the world of electronic music as Boys Noize , has graced some of the world’s biggest stages performing alongside  huge industry names. Boys Noize has also cemented his place in Rolling Stone’s Top 10 ‘DJ’s Who Rule the  Earth’ as well as a winning Beatport’s ‘Best Electronic Act’ three consecutive years.
An undying work ethic and motivation to take electronic music to the next level on a global scale, Boys Noize  has remixed and produced the biggest names in the global music world such as Depeche Mode,  Draft Punk,  Feist, Santigold, Scissor Sisters,Snoop Dogg and Skrilliex and is known for his innovative sound.
Promising an explosive and electrifying performance, Boys Noize  will be setting the decks on fire at the upcoming Bonnaroo, Rock AM Ring and Rock Werchter festivals before treating fans at this year’s Vodacom In The City.
Despite non-stop touring, his ever-expanding label roster and the increased demand for his time as a producer and remixer, Ridhaʼs primary loves continue to be the twin pursuits of making and performing music. Following the release of his third long-player Out Of the Black in late 2012, he presented the first Boys Noize  'Live' show to the masses.
“I really wanted to give people a concert where I perform my music only. It ́s not that I don ́t like DJing anymore; I’m a DJ to the bone and will always be, but playing my tracks live and putting on a completely new show was something I wanted to do for a long time. It’s different, it’s fresh and that it’s  what I love."
See alt-Jay and Boys Noize at Vodacom In The City at Mary Fitzgerald Square on 4 October 2013.
Keep an eye out for the next international act, which will be announced soon!
